INDIA, Gupta Empire. First Dynasty. Kumaragupta I Mahendraditya, circa 413-455. Drachm (Silver, 14 mm, 2.16 g). Bust of Kumarugupta as Makugupta to right, wearing headdress and earring. Rev. PARAMA BHAGAVATA MAHARAJADHIRAJA SRI MAKUGUPTA MAHENDRATIYA ('Great King, Lord Makugupta Mahendratiya the highest stage devotee [of Vishnu]' in Brahmi) Garuda standing facing on cloud with spread wings. Apparently unpublished and unique, a very interesting issue. Light marks and slightly double struck, otherwise, good very fine.

From a collection of coins from Central Asia.

The name Makugupta, which is clearly visible on the reverse, is either a new epithet for Kumaragupta, or the new name for a hitherto unattested Gupta King who ruled after him.
